What size tank do I need?

I've lived most of my life reliant on rainwater for domestic use, so understand the logistics of the essential infrastructure that is required for most rural properties.

There are 2 ways to look at rainwater storage...

Firstly...the average "family" using rainwater for their total domestic use will probably need around 100,000 litres of rainwater storage.  With water being such a necessity, we recommend the installation of the largest tank you can afford and fit on your site.

Secondly...we can calculate how much rainwater you can catch annually, and size a tank on that basis.
The general rule of thumb for tank sizing is that you work out the roof area you are catching rainfall from, then you multiply by the annual rainfall (for central Victoria it’s roughly 500mm per year), then you divide by 2.5 (the general idea is to fill your tank 2.5 times in a year)
So...let’s say for a typical 6m x 6m double carport...
Roof width x length in meters
6 x 6 = 36 m2
Multiply by 500
36 x 500 = 18,000 litres
Then divide by 2.5
18,000 / 2.5 = 7,200 litre tank

What is the significance of the name "Sirius" ?

Sirius is the name of the brightest star in the sky and the HMS Sirius was the flagship of the first fleet. What has this to do with tanks? Nothing - but we liked the name.
